Research in The Primary English Classroom


Here I'll talk about a research in the primary English classroom that I search online. The title of the research is "English Language Teaching at Makassar Primary Schools: A Case Study" that is written by Rosmadewi. 

The aim of the research was to find out the current practice of English language teaching at elementary schools by looking at the teachers and students perspectives especially in relation to the English teaching materials, teaching aids, and time allocation. It was also to uncover the challenges teachers faced in teaching English at primary school level.

The data gained through observation, questionnaire and interview. The observation was conducted to get an understanding of teaching and learning in classroom context. 

The questionnaire was used to get the learners’ perspective on teaching English at primary level. In addition, semi-structured interview was conducted to gain a deeper understanding of teachers’ viewpoints in ELT practice in elementary schools. 

The data were classified based on the categories as follows:

a. Teachers’ perspective: teaching materials, teaching aids, and time allocation.

b. Students’ view: teaching materials, teaching aids, and time allocation.

So the things that I found from her research is the teachers that she used as the resources use textbook as the only main resources for teaching. And the challenges they faced in teaching are limited availability of teaching material, large class size makes it difficult to manage, limited allocation of time, and difficulty in finding appropriate teaching method. 

Meanwhile the students they taught refers or more interested in learning English using different method of teaching as well as the variety of teaching material and aids. 

So, it's suggested so the government can facilitate the needs of the teacher so they are able to teach the students in a complete equipment. Also it is suggested to the government to  pay much more attention to the implementation of English as one of the local content in school and add the time allocation to teach English in schoo. And teachers proffesional development programs are badly required especially improving teachers' knowledge in teaching method and development of children.

Hello, nice to see you again! When teaching English to young learners, all things needed is really different compared to teaching older learners, including the materials.  In teaching young learners, we need to design materials that not only needed or important to be taught, but also we have to consider the readiness of the learners to learn those mateials. No matter how important a certain material needed, if the learners don't ready yet, then it would be useless. Not only in designing the materials, but teacher also need to consider the materials evaluation. We have to avoid a bias evaluation and an unfair materials evaluation. We should evaluate based on the student's position, point of view, inteligence, personality, condition, etc. We shouldn't give the same evaluation for every individual that obviously different one another.

Hello fellas!!! Speaking about assessment, we usually think about grading, scoring, judging. It's about the result of assessing that can be in the form of quality or quantity. Almost everyday in every area in our life, we face that thing that called assessment. It can be assessment in school, assessment in job, etc. In teaching English to young learners we also need that so-called assessment. But in assessing young learners, we need a different way to assess compared to older learners. We need to assess the kids carefully in order to avoid an issue where the toung learners would lose their interest in learning cause in some cases children who got a low grade may lose their motivation in learning. Rituals in School

Hello guys, see you again in this lovely day. Do you guys have rituals that y'all did with your teacher back in school? You know, I mean, it's a kind of habit that you did whether it's before entering the class, during the class, or after the class. I guess you have, don't you?  Cause you know when we're in school, especially in elementery school, we usually had habits like greeted the teacher or kissed the teachers' hands or whatever.  Well, today I'm going to talk about those habits or so-called rituals that I had back in elementary school days.  When I was in elementary school, the rituals we usually did in the morning when we're in the courtyard doing the go-ahead.
