Teaching Reading and Writing

Hello guys, welcome back to my blog. Nice to see you again :)

The topic that I'm going to discuss this time is about "Teaching Reading and Writing" to young learners.

So, let's get it!!!

In learning English, there are four skills that needed to develop in order to be able to communicate fluently. But, here I'll only discuss two of them namely reading and writing skills.

Basically, all the English skills are developed by the help of English teacher. So, here I'll discuss some factors that needed to be concerned by the English teacher to help their students to develop their reading and writing skills.

The first is teaching reading. In teaching this skill, there are two main reading skills that English teacher should put more focus on. The two skills are skill in understanding meaning and context and decoding letters and words. These two skills can be develop  by relying on bottom-up (focus on decoding letters and words) and top-down (focus on meaning and context).

In teaching reading, there are three main approches that English teacher need to concern. They are the phonics approach, the whole language approach, and the language experience approach. The phonics approach focuses on using bottom-up language processing, while the whole language approach and the language experience approach rely on using top-down language processing.

And the second is teaching writing. While developing writing skill, our reading skill will also developed. According to Shin and Crandall (2014), there are three main approaches in teaching writing. They are:

  1. A product-based approach – one that focuses on the final product;
  2. A process-based approach – one that focuses on the process of writing;
  3. And the last approach is TO/WITH/BY approach, which focuses on teaching reading and writing simultaneously, though carefully scaffolded activities.
