Learning Second/Third Languages at Home and at School

Hello good people!!!

Welcome back to my blog...nice to meet you!

Well, if in the last post I was talking about Learning the first language at home and at school, here I'm going to talk about learning second languages at home and at school.

So, in a book that I read, I find things that need to be concerned by second language learners, such as:

- Second languages learners who are fluent in daily conversation or Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skill (BICS) not necessarily fluent in school language too or also known as Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP). Because, vocabularies needed in school are totally different with everyday vocabularies.

- In order to comprehend CALP, second language learners need more time than to comprehend BICS. Because to comprehend BICS, second language learners only need approximately two years while to comprehend CALP, they need around five to seven years.

- Age also influence the second language learners' ability to comprehend the second language they are learning. Younger learners tend to be easier in comprehending the new language, because they can acquire grammatical structures without explicitly thinking about them. Younger learners are learning the language naturally from the rich input around them. They are also good at impersonating the phonological sounds which make them better in pronunciation comparing to the older learners.

-  Age doesn't influence the success of the second language learners who are learning the new language in places where is not the  language origin or TEFL learners. They find it more difficult to comprehend the new language because of the input limitations.

So, guys, that's all what I learnt from the book that I read. Do you have another idea that influence the second language learners?

If you do, please comment down below! I'd glad to see your comment!
